The Deferral of Rate Liabilities Scheme has been set up by the 'smashing' chaps at our District council buisness rates departments.
You now may be able to spread the payment of the increase in your 2009/10 business rates bill over a 3 year period. There is a Leaflet that provides the full details, which is only available for this financial year only. If you wish to opt into the scheme, simply fill out the form, sign it and return to your district council. Quite simple really. Print Hut have done it and seems to be a no brainer really. Work smarter!

The media landscape is changing for all businesses large and small and if you are not onboard online then you are quite simply invisible. Take this comment post for example; the very fact I have displayed an interest in a subject and taken time out to engage with our blogg, will make Print Hut! more visable than it was 30 seconds ago. As a business owner, I have decided that if I am not managing my online content and treating it as my intellectual property and as a soft assett then I might as well pull down the shutters on the business. However a word of wisdom; this doesn’t mean spending hundreds of pounds on actual web site material but instead try putting just 1 hour in your diary every day to build content, that will then lead your readership onto your business site where they can then make a considered opinion about your business offering. We employ one member of the team to now work for 6 hours a week as an online content manager, building presence, visability and that all important online reputation. Yellow inks

Whilst taking a few pictures the other day I stumbled across the yellow unit on a B2 press and recalled the issues we used to have with this process colour from hell. Apparently all of our personalisation problems, which at one stage seemed to have occurred on a weekly basis were down to the presence of wax in the pigments! Envelope printing

Quick thought for you micro biz people! Save money and print the return address on the face and not the flap. This is perfectly acceptable and will keep costs down. Also make the envelope sweat a bit more and print a call for action or marketing message.

Paper matters

Micro biz customers often ask Print Hut about specific papers. Our advise is that unless you are using a speciality paper for may be wedding stationery let us pick the brand. Essentially you have three choices of types; those are gloss, silk (often referred to as Matt) and the increasingly popular uncoated though more expensive per tonne and no less environmentally friendly. Lastly watch out when folding heavy cards by getting your printer to crease before folding. If unsure give us a call first.

Van spotting

Print Hut gets its orders from various sources using the usual mix of marketing advertising networking and PR. However my favourite source can be found at the bottom of the drag list on our management information system "conker" . Van spotting is a serious revenue stream for us. Not only that, its a real tax benefit as well. As an advertising source it pays its own way entirely. However what I Like about van spotting is that it is reassuringly simple isn't it. FSB give up on the Keep it Local rant

I see that FSB have dragged in Brian Binley
MP to grow the debate about buying local products. This is a lovely sweet idea but belongs in the home front of the 1940s along with captain Mainwaring and Godfrey's aunt dolly's up side down cakes! Hasn't anybody heard of the global village and the internet at FSB HQ? If you really believe in this dribble why not produce a local First Voice magazine for every town in the country and allow local businesses to advertise in it? Off course you will have to ensure their own supply chains are managed and sourced locally as well. Sounds a great idea, providing we all ignore the costs. Wakey wakey FSB!

Printed matter fighting back

The Direct Marketing Association's (DMA) Inserts Council has revealed that inserts are being devalued as marketers fail to acknowledge their ability to generate a significant online response.

Research commissioned by the council showed that an average of 52 per cent of responses to inserts went online, with some advertisements prompting an online response as high as 70 per cent.

The research measured the percentage of insert responses that go online and how this differs by client sector and magazine type.

The results were taken from more than four million inserts sent out by a pool of five clients representing diverse industry sectors.

All the inserts were in the same A5 format and were carried in a range of titles including newspaper colour supplements, television magazines, women's weeklies and third-party book clubs.

Of all the commercial sectors, cosmetic surgery prompted the largest online response with 70 per cent of respondents turning to the web for more information.

This was followed by toy retailer inserts, which resulted in 58 per cent of responses going online and charity inserts, which recorded a 27 per cent online response.

The majority of titles led to a high percentage of respondents going online.

A clear link was apparent between the title's readership and its website's usage and longevity.
